4A good emergency lightApr 05, 2008
I've had mine for a few years, I got it when they were first produced. I love this item. I must say however, that it's a bit pricey, but think of it as insurance.

To start with, Pelican's warranty on all their lights and cases is an unconditional lifetime warranty.

Next, the light has five 5 mm LEDs. It won't win awards for how bright it is, but it doesn't have to. It works extremely well for it's intended purpose. It's quite capable of getting you out of the house or to safety when a tornado or earthquate strikes, or just for use when the power goes out. LED lights have a superior beam pattern with no rings or holes like incandescent bulbs. The color is white and stays white until the cells expire, unlike the yellowing incandescents.

It has a runtime of 90 hours on the included Energizer Titanium cells. Ninety hours is sufficient for the vast majority of power outages. If it were powered by Energizer Lithiums, I think the runtime would be even longer, in addition to having a shelf life of 10 years instead of 7. One feature I wish the the case of the light itself had, is the ability to stand it up on it's tail for hands free light. This works well, as the light reflected from a white ceiling is cast all over the room. This is the "candle mode" referred to by maglite. But I personally prefer Pelican lights to maglites, myself.

You wouldn't think that the light in your house could get this to glow, but it does. The last house I lived in was much darker than this one, and I could see it pretty well at night. The house I'm in now is very bright at night, so I don't see the glow. However, to be fair, I can walk around with no problems with the lights off at night.

The 3 labels on the enclosure that is mounted on the wall, you can see them in the photo there, all glow as well. The package comes with 3 screws and 3 plastic anchors for mounting to the wall. If you're a more permanent resident, there is a double sided adhesive foam pad included to stick it to the wall. There are 6 mounting holes in the enclosure, but 3 are sufficient to mount it solidly. Also included is a red plastic "lock" (similar to the one on a fire extinguisher) that fits into the eyes on the enclosure. This would be helpful if you purchase the item for a business, or if you have curious kids. I think it shoud have come with 7 of them, to allow yearly checks of the light, for the life of it's cells.

So, in summation, I would have given it 5 stars if you could stand it on it's tail, & it came with Energizer Lithium cells & and had more included locks.
